Member Profile – Rolanda
Rolanda R., a 13-year old member at the Thomas S. Murphy Clubhouse and an 8th grader at Star Academy, continues to be a “rising star” at the Clubhouse, says Director of the Future John Johnson. While she maintains a high GPA and dedication to her school work, her biggest passion is athletics.
At the Clubhouse, Rolanda is able to strike just the right balance between keeping her education a priority and honing her basketball skills. Rolanda knows that athletic success isn’t always guaranteed and has her sights set on academic greatness as well. “I love playing basketball and one day I want to play in the WNBA. That’s after I graduate from UCONN,” she says.
If playing professional basketball doesn’t work out, Rolanda is considering pursuing her medical degree. “I’m interested in becoming a doctor,” she says. “That’s something that I can control if I work hard and do well! I’m very competitive and I won’t let anything take away from my goals.”
Rolanda credits the Boys and Girls Club for helping in her development. “I’ve been coming to the Club since I was 9 years old. It’s like a home away from home. The members and the staff are my family!”
Math in Motion Program
At our Clubhouses, exploration into the different areas of learning took flight this month when our members visited the Intrepid Sea, Air, & Space Museum, an American military and maritime history museum in New York City, to kick off the “Math in Motion” program. Members from all four of our Clubhouses climbed aboard the USS Intrepid aircraft carrier and joined the museum’s Education Team to learn about the history, science, and math that goes into creating and flying airplanes. Members and staff were guided through over 30 exhibits that highlight some of history’s most revolutionary aircrafts.
Continuing through the spring, members will take part in a 4-week long curriculum that will prepare them to create 3-D models of their very own 3-D airplanes. The trip to the museum, in conjunction with the three lesson curriculum, will promote curiosity about the design process of airplanes and encourage members to use critical thinking skills to adjust the details of their model planes. Additionally, our Clubhouse Education Directors were able to learn about the mechanics of 3-D printing to assist in the creation of the members’ model planes.
STEM learning and an encouraged interest in science, technology, engineering, & math continues to soar at our Clubs, getting our members ready for takeoff!
