AUGUST MADISON MATTERS

Summer’s Almost Over, But the Fun Won’t Stop: Club Fun Summer Program Round-up

As summer 2018 comes to a close, so does another successful Club Fun. Our members have been busy keeping their STEM skills sharp, soaking up the sunshine, and enjoying an exciting season of fun at our Clubhouses.

All summer long, our Club Fun members have been hard at work making memories. Members participated in a range of activities at each of our four Clubhouses. It may be summer, but we are still focused on offering members skills and activities that fall under our three priority outcome: Academic Success, Healthy Lifestyles, and Good Character & Citizenship. Some highlights include:

Academic Success

In addition to our Summer Brain Gain activities (which help alleviate summer learning loss), we also hosted literary moments with the Big Red Chair! Our Navy Yard Clubhouse shined by having two celebrity guest readers. Each guest stepped in and read some of their favorite stories to our Explorers and Juniors. Legendary hip-hop artist Darryl McDaniels from RUN DMC and former Madison Club kid & model/actress Damaris Lewis spent some time chatting with our members, fielding questions, and expressing what they love most about reading.

Healthy Lifestyles

On August 14th, all four Clubhouses participated in Madison’s 1st Annual 5K Walk! Members utilized their Clubhouse neighborhoods to promote healthy living and exercise. Each Clubhouse recruited local celebrities to serve as Grand Marshalls and all members received awards for their participation. With such a successful first year in the books, we hope to make the 5K Walk an exciting Club Fun event for years to come.

Good Character & Citizenship

Our Thomas S. Murphy Clubhouse and Columbus Clubhouse continued to spread love and peace with their annual walk across the Brooklyn Bridge. Each summer, members demonstrate a hope for peace and unity by making signs, chanting positive messages, and walking across Brooklyn Bridge. Their hope is to inspire others to be more positive and unite NYC communities.

Club Fun wouldn’t have been possible without the help and support of our amazing corporate volunteers. This summer we welcomed volunteers from Deloitte, Ernst & Young, Goldman Sachs, & OppenheimerFunds. Volunteers helped to brighten and repaint play yards, spent time with members during their Club Fun activities, taught them new skills, and brought fresh energy to our Clubhouses. Thank you for your commitment to our members!
